We were honoured to be invited by Southwark Youth and Play Service to create and pilot a whole day’s training to support youth workers manage situations involving trauma experieinced by young people, community members, colleauges, or indeed themselves.
We contacted the amazing Dr Ron Dodzro who agreed to co-design and co-deliver this with us. We worked together for several months to craft a product that provided both theoretical and practical content, and finally delivered it at Southwark Youth Justice Service premeses on 26th February 2025.
Here’s a short video to give a flavour of how it went.
In the evaluation we asked what participants gained from the training. They said:
- A different way to look at and identify traumas
- To firstly understand trauma, behaviours and factors which can influence how one person is, secondly identifying traumatic symptoms through behaviours and language used by those who we work alongside. The discussions and information provided today was really helpful for us to share and practice in our professions – many thanks
- This training really increased my insight into PTSD and brooder Trauma
- From this couse I have gained a wealth of Knowledge, experience and a better understanding being taken out my comfort zone as being a football coach we are just presived as that type of coach by attending this course it enables me to learn add new tools to my tool on so I can use this when engaging with young people, glade to have attended this course and with the people I have done it with as I’ve also learned from them, anyone thinking of doing this course is a no trainer and should be done extremely beneficial and better for after the course has finished. Thank you to the organisers and to the delivery personnel very grateful to have been accepted onto this course.
Then we asked what was the most useful part:
- Group and broken conversations, hearing all expierences
- Information provided and breakdown of what trauma is and how best to help/deal with it if it arises
- The diagram
- The knowledge that was being shared and the open room feel we’re very insiteful and there also being a clear understanding behind it which gets you thinking as an individual to then relay in your own settings
There was only one suggestion for improvement, which was:
- There isn’t anything I would change what i would like to see is this course roled out more regularly as the more people who can attend will only benefit the community and our young people
We hope to deliver this again, and Dr Ron is very happy to work with us again too, so please get in touch if it’s something your setting might find useful.
